The Courage To Teach - II. Palmer writes: “My ability to connect with my students and to connect them with the subject, depends less on the methods I use than on the degree to which I know and trust my selfhood—and I am willing to make it available and vulnerable in the service of learning”. What does it mean to rely on your selfhood rather than methods.

I think the author means that often teachers try to apply the methods without really taking into account the real needs of students.

When, in fact, the individuality of each teacher refers to applying certain techniques according to the context of students' lives or specific resources that are counted in the classroom.

It does not refer to generalize a learning process, to repeat the same routine because each group of students has different learning styles, different needs and different learning rates.

In that case most times the teacher must be able to trust their individuality rather than on methods not because the methods are not effective but it is necessary to differentiate the techniques that we can apply and that would not be useful with certain group of students.

We must develop the ability to listen to our students, observe their behavior in specific situations to implement the best techniques and make sure to take the best of each theoretical framework to effectively implement it.

Each teacher has different experiences with their students thus becomes a necessity to constantly innovate their lessons, and trust in your ability to achieve individually meet the expectations of their students.

Sometimes teachers do not understand why if they applied a certain method fail to connect with their students the fact is also the attitude of the teacher if we are not able to create spaces for students to feel safe to learn, or they do not feel taken into account on what they have to say that means something is failing in our method and use the selfhood is a useful tool for teachers.
